LEGALLY BLONDE
[http://www.atnzone.com/moviezone/reviews2001/legallyblonde.html]
"Legally
Blonde," the directing bow of Robert
Luketic, is an intentionally frothy, good-natured
comedy about female empowerment and getting
to show your true colors in a cynical society.
At the forefront is Witherspoon, in a role
that is perfectly tailor-made for her sturdy
comedic talents and she shines in every second
of its entertaining, fast-paced 96 minutes.
In Legally Blonde, the sweet Reese Witherspoon
stars as a fashion obsessed airhead who winds
up captivating that Ivy League law school
by storm. Unnecessary to say, there is not
a single believable moment in the film, but
that is usually the case with most fish-out-of-water
scenarios anyway. What Legally Blonde does
have is a mild vitality, a bubbly attitude
and a blowing charm that reflect to a tee
the character of its principal character.
Reese Witherspoon plays a fashion student
who decides to go to Harvard to turn into
a law student. She is dumped by her boyfriend
and goes to the law school ensuing his boyfriend
to win him back. Witherspoon's performances
as the lead character make worth to see Legally
Blonde. She simply carries the entire movie
on her frail shoulders, in style. All the
other characters just move in and out of the
scenes.
The film starts off with Reece planning for
what she thought will be a proposal from her
present boyfriend, who on the contrary dumped
her because he thought that she is not good
enough for her. After this heartbreaking incident
she went to Harvard after him in order to
win him back, because she believes he is the
love of her life. The trip that Elle takes
as she sets out to regain her boyfriend, only
to find that she is more than proficient of
standing on her own two feet, is a very predictable
one, and so is the outcome of the climactic
murder trial.
But once she gets their she finds out her
lover is affianced to a rude enemy of a changed,
opposing hair color. And you know that this
new curt brunette "villain" is going
to have one of two fates, which are, have
some shameful outcome to her life or become
excellent friend with the main character.

Also
her arrival does bring a dramatic amount of
diversity to a drab looking group of young
overachievers who ridicule her, calling her
"Malibu Barbie." Her clothing choices
of faux fur, rose colored glasses and outrageously
bright colors are hilarious. The students
look at her as if she were an alien from another
planet and treat her like she has a contagious
and incurable disease
As the movie progresses, a point where this
blonde superhero realizes the true beauty
within her and inevitably gets the man she
has been thinking about all her life.
Their comes a time in the movie when all her
friends lose trust in her but she eventually
gathers herself to win back the trust of her
friends.
Legally Blonde was a pleasant surprise for
the first hour. It was a smart, humorous fun
film about a brainy Bel Air cheerleader dealing
with her first year at Harvard Law School.
This air headedness can be judged from the
courtroom scene where she arrives in a shiny
pink Barbie dress but by the end of the scene
she slowly transforms into a crusading guardian
of right. Her whole attitude and body language
transforms and the Barbie dress fades to triviality.
This movie seemed like it has a dull plotline
with smarts, laughs, and nothing else. But
on the contrary. This movie is certainly a
source of inspiration for people who think
that they are little and it clearly sends
the message that people should not be perceived
by their exterior appearance. Not only does
this movie motivate those who are judged for
who & what they are, but it also makes
you laugh a lot. Also the film is visually
remarkable because of feisty use of colors
for Elle's Wardrobe.
The acting was above average; it takes great
skill to play a role like Elle Woods bright,
resolute and clever while appearing as a blonde
bimbo and playing it with conviction.
And if the plot were less than convincing,
some great acting and quite exceptional dialog
made up for the poor underpinnings. Reese
Witherspoon certainly should be appreciated
with which she pulled this one off. There
were also some sterling supporting performances,
notably by Selma Blair as the rival, who progressively
evolves into a stunning beauty as the film
progresses and also developing a warm relationship
with Elle.
Elle Woods played by Reese Witherspoon gives
her Barbie Doll character both charisma and
substance. This movie could easily have taken
a turn for the worst, but it doesn't. It's
sticks to its subject to be real to yourself
and believe in yourself driving the main character
along a path that she would not have chosen
otherwise for herself, a difficult path that
none of her family or friends would have wanted
her to take.
Both the main characters have very distinct
futures programmed for themselves at the beginning,
both the characters counter problems and abrupt
twists of fate, following in their growth
and development in their characters. Both
the main characters that is Joel and Elle
are changed tremendously by there past experiences
in the "real world".
In the end, the naive teenager is gone and
the young but maturing adult who is ready
to face life has begun to emerge.
